APF Bulletin March 2009
Welcome to the monthly newsletter of the APF, a round up of news, activities and events involving national human rights institutions in the Asia Pacific region.
Five APF member institutions, along with the APF Secretariat, attended this month’s session of the Commission on the Status of Women to advocate for the independent participation of NHRIs in the UN body.
Following consultations with key stakeholders in December last year, the APF has prepared a review of the bill to establish Pakistan's national human rights commission.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed growing alarm at the number of civilians reported killed and injured in the conflict in northern Sri Lanka.
The recent meeting of the International Coordinating Committee coincided with the 10th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, with the APF using the opportunity to highlight the important role of NHRIs in promoting implementation of the new UN disability convention.
A landmark treaty adopted 20 years ago has transformed the way the world views children but greater efforts are needed to ensure that their rights are protected and advanced.
“National institutions must address the critical gaps in human rights protection to be credible and effective,” says the man who leads the OHCHR's National Institutions Unit.
