APF Bulletin April 2008
Welcome to the monthly newsletter of the APF, a round up of news, activities and events involving national human rights institutions in the Asia Pacific.
Following discussions at the last APF Annual Meeting, Australia's Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has published a background paper to draw attention to the serious human rights challenges posed by climate change.
A new research project is examining different models of national human rights institutions, including those in the Asia Pacific, and drawing out important lessons which could guide development of a human rights commission for China.
APF members and the APF Secretariat took part in the meeting, held in Geneva between 14-18 April, which agreed on a new legal and governance framework to support the ICC engage more effectively with the UN Human Rights Council and its mechanisms.
Earlier this month Ecuador become the twentieth country to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which means the Convention and its Optional Protocol will come into force on 3 May 2008.
A new report by the Equal Opportunity Commissioner sets out a number of key targets to promote women's participation in governance, professional and public life.
